A LAN or local area network is a collection of two or more computers, printers and other linked by ethernet cables in a reasonably small geographic location like a office or home. A LAN makes it possible for the connected users to share files and applications that usually reside on a server or some type of shared computers.  LAN were invented to let people and computers share information.  A server can have an application or database that is accessed by all the other computers on the LAN. This allow users to share information quickly and easily.

Ethernet is the fastest wired network protocal with connection speeds of 10 megabits per second (mbps) to 100 mbps or higher.

If the wired network is not able to fulfill your company's needs, let's say you have a team of mobile workforce travelling outstation or even overseas frequently, and they need to access to the server in the company in getting data or some other reasons.

This can be done by getting a fixed I.P.address and Windows Server 2003 as your operating systems for your server.

If you work at home and need to logon to a secure network at your office, the fixed IP will enable you to connect to your company's Intranet while maintaining the desired level of security for Intranets. A fixed IP Address would allow you to give out one address to everyone, and they could then use that address to connect to your server while you were connected to Internet.

The usefullness of having the computer outside from your office connected with the server in your office can be seen in the diagram below
